More than any other wine the Basket Press Shiraz represents what Rockford is all about. It really made this business and changed the way a lot of people looked at Barossa Shiraz.
It has much in common with other handcrafted quality produce in that it draws heavily on the wisdom and shared knowledge of previous generations of Australian winemakers and recognises that at the heart of every great wine is a great vineyard. Full-bodied Australian Shiraz has now taken its rightful place amongst the great wines of the world.
The grapes, from mature vines up to 130 years of age are hand-picked from select family owned vineyards located throughout the Barossa and Eden Valley. The wine is hand made using equipment for the turn of the last century – grapes are hand forked into our 1880’s Bagshaw crushing machine, open fermented for a period of 5 - 7 days and then gently basket pressed. Individual vineyard parcels are then aged in American and French hogsheads and season oak vats for two years, prior to blending and bottling.
All this contributes to our objective to make the very highest quality traditional, soft, deep coloured, earthy Australian red wine which will bottle age and continue to develop greater richness and complexity for more than10 years.
