ROCKFORD MOPPA SPRINGS GRENACHE MATARO SHIRAZ 2018

Moppa Springs, Ebenezer and Kalimna are some of the driest areas in the Barossa, where green vines grow on one side of the fence and ripened wheat on the other. This hard country is cold, wet and frosty during pruning, then hot, dry and dusty during harvest. These are the kind of tough conditions that ensure Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz give their best. These varieties and the families who grow them earned the right to represent the Barossa in this traditional blend by surviving for more than 150 years when others could not.
Like all Rockford reds, the grapes for this wine are hand forked into our 1880’s Bagshaw de- stemmer, open fermented and then gently basket pressed. All components are aged separately in a combination of seasoned American and French oak hogsheads and large vats to allow the tannins to soften and colours and flavours to consolidate, before being bottled under the highest quality cork.
Despite the season being one of the driest in many decades, it lacked any prolonged heat waves or significant rainfall events, much to our relief. These conditions gave us high quality fruit with
  deep, concentrated colour and spicy aromatics.
The 2018 vintage Moppa Springs is earthy, soft and spicy. It’s a great reflection of this vintage and how perfectly suited the Barossa’s Mediterranean climate is for these pioneer varieties
