JIM BARRY THE ARMAGH SHIRAZ 2013

JIM BARRY

$399.99

Quantity

The name of ‘Armagh’ was bestowed by the original Irish settlers who arrived in 1849, and named the lush rolling hills after their homeland.

The vineyard was planted by Jim Barry in 1968 and yields less than two tonnes per acre. The soil is sandy-gravel and receives an average rainfall of 600mm per year. The vineyard lies on a north-west facing slope which acts as a natural sun trap, ensuring the fruit is always fully ripened when picked.

Sight

A deep inky red with a magenta hue in the glass.

Aromas

This wine opens with intense aromas of rich dark fruit, sweet and savoury spice, dark chocolate and dried herbs.

How it tastes

The palate displays concentrated dark fruit flavours of blackberry and cherry, supported by liquorice and creamy mocha oak. Well weighted with firm, fine tannin in support of the abundance of persistent, lively flavour. A wine of great power, length and poise.

A powerhouse release. It rips, it churns, it impresses and most all: it gets on with business. Dense black berried fruits of various persuasions, coffee-cream oak, sprinkles of dried herbs and a surge of flavour and tannin to close. It's like admiring a big sea; the power complete with the glory.

Andrew Caillard MW - 30 Years of Armagh Tasting - 98 points

Deep colour. Intense elderberry, blackberry aromas with very attractive toasty, grilled nut, roasted chestnut comeplety. Concentrated and elemental with intense elderberry, mulberry, espresso, liquorice fruits; all balanced with fine plentiful graphite tannins and superb toasty, mocha notes. Finishes al dente firm but long and minerally, A very expressive and expansive wine. Destined to be a classic. Leave for a decade at least.
